Zdeno Chara is a long-standing Bruins defenseman who has retired from NHL after 24 seasons

Zdeno Chara holds the NHLRecord for defenseman games played, Chara is retiring after 24 seasons. Chara will sign an all-day deal with BostonHe said he was retiring as a Bruin at TD Garden on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old Chara played 1,680 games, surpassing Chris Chelios’ previous record for a defenseman (1,651) in February. He finished with 209 goals, 471 assists and 680 points.

The third round pick of the IslandersThe 6-foot-9 defenseman was selected in 1996 in the NHL Draft. He played 1,023 games for the Bruins and was captain for the entire 14-season span. He was a key player in the Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup win and won the Norris Trophy 2009. He also donned the suit for the Ottawa SenatorsAnd Washington Capitals.
