Google notes that you can use mail merge tags to send personalized emails to large audiences using web Gmail.
Google has promised to include support for spreadsheet-based mail merge tag support in the future. Based on what Google Contacts has created, the recipients will see their first and last names in email. Gmail will try to “infer” the first and last names of recipients who are not in your contact list. This is based on the format of the name. To ensure recipients can see correct names, the best thing to do is add recipients first to Contacts.
After adding recipients to your email draft, you can insert mail merge tags by simply typing “@”. You must manually activate multi-send mode by using the button on the Compose toolbar.
This feature will be available over the next few weeks, beginning with Rapid Release domains this week. Scheduled Release domains will see the feature starting November 7.
