The Guardians were the first to score. Steven Kwan scored a solo homer in the third inning against Gerrit Colley, who had allowed the second-most homers in baseball this season. Cleveland loaded the bases in that inning with just one out. But Cole induced fielder’s choice at home and a strikeout to get out of the jam, and he coasted from there. He ended his night with 6.1 innings, eight strikeouts, four walks, and only the one run.

Harrison Bader, a Yankees’ trade deadline acquisition, tied the game in the bottom of the third with a solo shot of his own. Josh Donaldson thought that he had given the Yanks an advantage of 2-1 in the fifth. He was wrong. went into a home run trot. The ball hit the roof of the short porch and Donaldson, confused, was tagged out at the first base. The Yanks quickly made up for it though – the next batter in Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled and reached third on an error by right fielder Oscar Gonzalez, and Jose Trevino’s sac fly gave the Yanks a lead.

Cal Quantrill walked Aaron Judge in the sixth, but Anthony Rizzo did the damage, hitting a two run shot to the second deck. The Bombers took a 4-1 lead.

Cole was greeted with a standing ovation when Jonathan Loaisiga took the tying run at home plate. Amed Rosario, however, grounded into a 6-6-3 double-play to end the threat. Jose Ramirez is now on deck. In the eighth, the Guardians were also defeated by a double play.

The Yankees’ bullpen was a big question mark going into this postseason – they have been plagued with injuries all season (they lost Scott Effross earlier Tuesday due to Tommy John surgery), and inconsistent all season with no true closer. Clay Holmes, Wandy Perryalta, Loaisiga and Wandy Peralta combined for 2.2 scoreless runs.

So far, the Guardians have scored only four runs in three games postseason – all via the home run.
