Yankees’ NestorCortes retires from do-or die Game 4 due to injury

Nestor Cortes has left the New York YankeesGame 4, ‘Do-or-Die’, with an injury in 3rd inning Sunday.

Cortes was inspected by a trainer during the at bat against Jose AltuveBut he kept the game alive. However, when the next batter, Jeremy Peña, hit a three-run home run to tie the game, a trainer looked at home again and took him out.

Cortes’ average fastball velocity dropped almost three mph to the third inning, compared with the first and second innings.

Cortes was the Yankees’ most consistent pitcher of the season. His 2.44 ERA during the regular season was the highest on the team, and the 10th-lowest in the league. All things baseball (minimum 120 innings).

Cortes had allowed three earned run in Game 4 of his two starts, which spanned 11.0 innings (2.70 ERA). This was his first All Star season.

He was a 36th round draft pick in 2013. In 2018, he was designated as an Orioles assignment. The Yankees traded him in 2019. He re-signed with the Yankees before the 2021 season. His 2.90 ERA in 2021 made him a fan favorite. Many weren’t sure if it was legit, but he proved it was with his All Star campaign this year.

The Yanks will now have to manage seven innings from the bullpen – and fight back from a 4-3 deficit – in order to live to see another day.
