Wrexham’s Paul Mullin: Texting Reynolds about movies and McElhenney about the Golden Boot

If Hollywood’s own Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are talking about you on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it is more than likely you are a famous actor or comedian — not a footballer from Litherland, Liverpool.

This is the reason Paul Mullin’s mother Paula texted him to say something along the lines of: “F***! You are famous!”

It is impossible for the Wrexham striker to go to the shop and not be asked by people if they are Paul Mullin.

“It’s strange,” he tells The Athletic, still clearly getting to grips with life in the limelight. “It was actually when Ryan started putting pictures of me on Instagram I knew stuff was going to start to get a little bit weird. I now walk in the Tesco next to ours and people stop me. I don’t mind when I am at footy but when you can’t walk in your local shop without people stopping you and saying, ‘Do you play for Wrexham…?’ It’s mad.”

His goal scoring prowess is a major reason for his growing popularity. Mullin was a player for Cambridge United, scoring 32 goals in 46 league matches before he joined Wrexham. This promotion to League One, the third-tier English football league, saw Mullin score 32 goals. Mullin was even more famous for joining National League side Wrexham in the fifth tier, amid numerous offers from other countries.

It was the most talked about takeover in sporting history when Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the club, which is located in north Wales.

The club has attracted a lot of interest since then. After the Disney+ documentary, Welcome to Wrexham, that interest has increased,

It features Mullin as the marquee signing for the summer 2021.
