The world’s largest biomedical research agency has formally acknowledged the causal link between contact sports and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Campaign groups describe the move as a crucial moment in the ongoing debate over the long-term effects of contact sports on health.

After the death of a US National Institute of Health (NIH), the NIH rewrote its official guidance about the dangers of repetitive head injuries. Research published by Harvard University, Oxford Brookes University, and 11 other academic institutions in JulyThe Concussion Legacy Foundation also provides analysis.

That report found “conclusive evidence” that the progressive brain disease can be linked to sub-concussive blows such as heading or tackling. Its authors called for “aggressive CTE mitigation programs, especially for children”.

CTE is a type of dementia that can cause dramatic changes in moods, behavior, cognition, and cognition. It is permanent.

CTE has been identified in athletes involved in American football, American Football, Rugby Union, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Mixed Martial Arts, Wrestling, and Boxing. There are many governing bodies including the NFL, NHLNCAA and the NCAA previously denied any causal link.

CTE was first discovered in the brain of Mike Webster, a Hall of Fame NFL football player. Pittsburgh SteelersBetween 1974 and 1988. As part of a class action lawsuit, the NFL paid $1billion to players in 2011.

Boston University researchers found evidence of CTE previously in 99% of brains of ex-NFL players. The disease has also been confirmed in the brains of dozens of ex-NHL players.

Football specifically, the link between heading and dementia has been established. A study found that ex-professional Scottish soccer players born between 1900-1976 were three-and-a half times more likely to die from the disease.

In 2002, a coroner found that heading was responsible for the death of former West Bromwich Albion striker Jeff Astle — recording a verdict of “death by industrial disease”. Five England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team have been diagnosed with dementia, with four dying of the disease.
