One morning, Amanda Hood didn’t give the transparent storage container that was lying on the front yard of her business any thought. Because she coordinated rescue efforts for Calhoun County Humane Society, she was used to goods being left behind overnight.
“I initially thought it was donations,” Hood told The Dodo. “Until I saw something Move.”
Hood reached out to the container for a better view. Hood approached the bag and noticed two small holes at its top. As she got closer, steam was building up in the bag.
Hood carefully opened the top, and was shocked to find not one but nearly a dozen puppies in the tote.
“There were 11 puppies all squished together in an itty bitty tote,” Hood said.

Nobody is certain of the pups’ exact route, but Hood believes they weren’t there for very long before she discovered them.
“They were probably only there for an hour or so,” Hood said. “Because with those two tiny holes for ventilation, I don’t think they would’ve made it for much longer.”
Hood took the puppies straight to the Humane Society immediately for a closer examination. All 11 puppies, which were approximately 5 weeks old, were healthy.
After their inspection, the family quickly moved into the shelter and began to behave like normal puppies.
“They eat, sleep and like to be held,” Hood said. “They’re the sweetest babies.”
The Calhoun County Humane Society does not have the space to accommodate the puppies’ family, as it is already overflowing with animals that were rescued.
“There seem to be a lot more animals needing homes than there are people to adopt them here,” Hood said.
The puppies were taken by the humane society to Forever Home Dog Rescue in Illinois. They are currently awaiting placement in foster care to increase their chances of being adopted.
Calhoun County Humane Society staff are already missing the 11 puppies, but they are happy to know that all of them will soon be in the loving homes they deserve.
