Wired Reports: Twitter employee had to stop IVF after being laid off, Wired Reports

  • One Twitter employee said that she was forced to stop IVF treatment because Elon Musk had laid her off.
  • Wired told her that she was promised that the health coverage would continue for one year after a merger. 
  • She stated that being “so close to having a baby and then being told it’s gone” was “heartbreaking.”

One Twitter employee claimed that she was forced to stop IVF treatment due to losing her job after Elon Musk’s acquisition. 

The woman did not wish to be identified. WiredTwitter offered to cover the costs of fertility treatment for couples who were unable to conceive in 2022 or 2023 at a cost of $24,000.

According to the woman, artificial insemination was started by her with a company called Carrot. Wired reported that her chances at getting pregnant naturally were “almost impossible” because of a blocked Fallopian Tube. “The only option I have for getting pregnant naturally is IVF.”

IVF is the procedure of taking out a woman’s eggs, fertilizing them in the laboratory and then transferring the embryos to the uterus.

Data from Centers for Disease Control and PreventionThe data suggests that there were just over 326,000 assisted reproduction technology cycles performed in the United States in 2020. This resulted in nearly 80,000 children.

Wired reported on the possibility that the woman wouldn’t be able to continue her expensive, lengthy treatment. She had also lost her job and her insurance. 

According to the report some Twitter employees were able to use their benefits in order to pay for IVF treatment. Others couldn’t secure appointments before the end of their contracts.

Wired spoke to the woman, saying: “It’s heartbreaking to be honest… to be so close to having a baby then being told it’s gone.”

Twitter staff received a severance package that could last up to 3 months, depending upon their location. Five employees were selected. A lawsuit was filed against Twitter on November 1,They stated that they had been promised at minimum two months’ severance, bonus plan compensation and the cash value for vested Twitter shares as well healthcare coverage.

These promises were made by Musk, but they weren’t kept. About 3,700 people were laid off on November 4.

Insider asked Twitter for comment but did not receive a response immediately.
