White House Deletes Tweet Crediting Biden after Twitter Fact-Check Tag

  • The White House tweeted Wednesday that President Biden was responsible for raising Social Security payments.
  • After users reported it as misleading, the tweet was removed and Twitter added a fact check label.
  • Although the White House claimed it was lacking context, Biden has previously praised the Social Security Increase.

The White House credited President Joe Biden with an upcoming increase in Social Security payments in a tweet on Wednesday — but quickly deleted it after a fact-check label was added due to a Twitter feature that allows users to flag misleading or incorrect posts.

“Seniors have seen the greatest increase in their Social Security benefits in 10 years because of President Biden’s leadership,” said the Since-deleted postAccording to the official White House Twitter account.

Seniors will be getting the largest Social Security payments in decades, but as a result of rampant inflation — rather than any specific effort by Biden, Jason Lalljee from Insider reported. Since 1972, Social Security benefits have been adjusted to reflect the rising cost of living. Last month, Social Security Administration announced that benefits would increase by 8.7% in line with these adjustments.

Twitter users quickly criticised the tweet’s description of the increase in income as an accomplishment of the Biden administration. They also apparently flagged it to Twitter. The tweet was immediately deleted. A context label was created, which pointed out that the increase was due annually to cost of living adjustments.

Within hours of the label being created, the White House removed the tweet.

Although the White House did not immediately reply to Insider’s request, Karine Jean-Pierre, press secretary said Wednesday the tweet was removed because it was missing context, saying it was not “complete.”

“In the past, we’ve pointed to that seniors’ medicare premiums are expected to decrease even though their Social Security checks rise,” she stated, adding that “This will mean that seniors will be able to stay ahead of inflation because of the rare combination rising benefits and falling premiums.”

However, it was not the first time Biden attempted to claim credit for the increase to Social Security payments.

Biden declared last week at a Democratic fundraiser that seniors would see the greatest increase in their Social Security benefits in 10 years. CNN.

Elon Musk appeared to revel in the unfolding events. One tweet noted that the White House had deleted the post following the addition of the label. It said, “Welcome @elonmusk’s Twitter,” credited to the Tesla billionaire.

Twitter’s new owner RespondedWrite, “The system seems to be working,” and include a laugh-crying emoticon.

Twitter claims that the label was created as a result. BirdwatchThis feature, which was first piloted in 2021 long before SpaceX CEO plans to buy the platform, is called. Birdwatch allows users the ability to flag misleading information in tweets.
