What is Mastodon, and why are so many Twitter users following it?

  • After Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, many Twitter users have switched to Mastodon social-network Mastodon.
  • Mastodon’s CEO stated that the platform had received 489,003 new users since October 27.
  • Here is a guide to the open source platform.

Many Twitter users are jumping shipSince Elon Musk took control of the social-media platform. Mastodon, a 2016-founded social network, is now reaping the rewards of this exodus.

Mastodon’s CEO, Eugen Rochko, The platform claims that it has over one million users, with 489,003 new users signing up since October 27 — the day that Musk His $44 billion deal closedTo buy Twitter

Mastodon uses a similar format as Twitter. Users create “toots” and share their posts with each other.

The software, however, is not Twitter-like. Decentralized and open-sourceIt means that there are many servers and companies running them.

Although the site has been around for six years, it is now experiencing a revival with some Twitter users who are looking for an alternative platform to Musk’s. How to create a Mastodon Profile?

Mastodon users can create profiles with usernames, display names, bios, avatars, and headers, just like other major social media networks.

To let others know how you use the platform, and to be interacted with, users can set “profile flags”.

Mastodon usernames look more like email addresses rather than the typical social-media handles. The username is chosen by the user. The second part refers to the Mastodon server that they signed up for.

The most common username will look something like: @username@Mastodon.

How to begin posting

Mastodon’s character limits are higher than Twitter’s. Toots can only post 500 characters per day.

By replying to, liking, and resharing the same things, users can interact with each others. They can also follow and search each other using hashtags.

Although verification is free on the platform Mastodon handles the process differently to Twitter.

Mastodon allows you to verify your link ownership by cross-referencing any links within a user’s profile. One example is that users can link to their homepage or personal blog.

What are Mastodon’s examples?

Mastodon can be used across multiple servers connected to common technology. After signing up, users first join a server (also known as instances).

These servers are often themed by things such as countries, cities, and interests. They aim to place users in a network of people who are likely post things they are most interested in.

Because the servers are all connected users can still follow each other and interact with them because they are all connected.

Each server determines its own content moderation rules. Users are encouraged to follow the ones that they agree with.

While some servers may require donations to create and maintain them, the vast majority are completely free.
