What have we learned after Miami’s 3-3 start? Mario Cristobal has more needs of his guys

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Miami Hurricanes are a .500 team at the midway point of the season, which is not what most expected after Mario Cristobal took over for Manny Diaz last December.

But not with Tyler Van DykeACC rookie-of-the-year, Corey Cristobal, is back at quarterback. This team also includes one of the largest staffs in the conference. But as the season has progressed, it has become apparent that Cristobal needs more of his hand-picked players on the roster, and there simply isn’t a lot of depth.

Saturday’s 20-14 win over Virginia TechLane Stadium was full with warts MiamiFor 159 yards, he was flagged 17 more times. After leading 17-0 at the halftime, the Hurricanes scored just three points and had to hang on for dear life to defeat the 2-5 Hokies. They have one of college football’s worst offenses.

In the end, Van Dyke (29 of 46 for 351 yards, 2 TDs) made all the plays he needed — including a 15-yard throw on third-and-8, followed by a 9-yard run on third-and-6 — to ice the game. What’s telling, though, is who else made the biggest plays for Miami.

They were Cristobal boys.

Frank Ladson Jr.?, Clemson transfer Cristobal brought back home, was on the receiving end of Van Dyke’s late third-down completion. He had five receptions for 58 yards, and one touchdown.
