Unfortunately, it was confirmed by the official PlayStation PodcastEpisode 439 reveals that PS VR2 is not compatible with the original PS VR. This is a significant blow to the headset’s launch lineup, and also a chance for some great old games to get a second live.

Even though it was the first PS VR, it was not as powerful as expected and also very cumbersome. It was frustrating to use because of the poor resolution, tracking, and improvised motion controls with camera. PS VR2 is a reversible headset that appears to be one of the best on the market.

The cords will always be the main question. While we can’t untether the PS VR2 from the PS5, which is doing the heavy lifting, we at least are down to a single, slim USB Type-C wire running from the headset into your console. It isn’t ideal, obviously, but it’s still a big step up from the last iteration.

PS VR2 will include two OLED eye display displays. Each display will be at a 2000×2040 resolution. They can also be combined to create 4000×2040 at a 110 degree field of view. This is higher than The Meta Quest 2.. It can also handle foveated render and frame rates up to 90Hz or 120Hz. The headset can process 4K HDR, and could potentially reach 120 frames per second. These numbers will vary from one game to the next.

The PS VR2 is impressive not only in terms of what your eyes will see, but also in the way it will perceive your eye. PS VR2 will include eye-tracking technology. This can provide immersive experiences as well as a way to alleviate motion sickness. There’s a lot of potential with eye-tracking and how it can be implemented, but it’s still so new that we don’t really know what to expect from it.

Another important lesson PS VR2 has learned is to use inside-out track instead of the external camera. The headset has four cameras that track your movements. Cinematic Mode allows you to use the headset as a screen to play normal media and games. This mode will run at 1920×1080 HRD, 24Hz/60Hz and 120Hz frame rates.

Finally, let’s talk about the new controllers. These controllers are called the PS VR2 Sense controllers and look similar to top VR controllers. Each controller comes with a thumbstick, trigger, two face buttons and a button to place your thumb. It has the same adaptive triggers as the PS5’s DualSense controller, haptic feedback, and full-finger touch detection. This allows the game to detect if your fingers are touching the controller or lifting it, allowing them to accurately represent gestures in the game.

Although nothing was new, it highlighted how the headset and controller will work together to immerse you fully in the game.

Prices

The official price for PS VR2 hasn’t been shared yet, but there is a ton of speculation that attempts to predict where it might end up based on the specs and how other headsets are priced. For comparison, the HTC Vive Pro headset is just below $800, while Oculus Quest II costs around $300. Sony won’t want to price the unit as high as the Vive, and we suspect it will do everything it can to keep it below the cost of a PS5, even if it means selling at a slight loss. It launched at $400 for the original PS VR, which we can see it returning to, but not exceeding $500. Lower would obviously be better, but for the power it’s packing in this thing, it likely won’t fall below $400.
