Voters consider removing Racist Language and fighting Text Bloat

Ratification of the Alabama Recompiled Constitution Ratification Question would occur if Alabama votes yes to it. Updated state constitutionAmong other changes, remove Jim Crow-era racist language. After hundreds of amendments, the current state constitution spans more that 400,000 words and dates back to 1901.

Ballot measure details

Alabama’s Recompiled constitution Ratification Question would make the state’s constitution easier to read, eliminate repetitive sections, get rid of racist language, and remove outdated laws.

It would also remove language that stated that marriage between a White and Black person was illegal. It would also eliminate language that says “colored children” cannot be educated in white schools.

Support or opposition

Bipartisan support was given to Alabama’s Recompiled Constitution Ratification Question, as well as support from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
