Vinicius Jr. dances on Wanda Metropolitano pitch as Atletico Madrid fans chant racist abuse at him during Real Madrid’s derby win

Real Madrid’s win over Atletico Madrid was overshadowed by some abhorrent racist chanting aimed at Vinicius Jr before the match.

Chants of ‘Vinicius is a monkey’ were heard from a large number of Atletico supporters outside the Wanda Metropolitano as Real Madrid’s team bus arrived at the ground.

This is just days after the Brazilian claimed he was a victim to xenophobia.

It was an Support offered in an outpouring for Vinicius Jr when he was told to ‘stop playing the monkey’ by President of the Association of Spanish Agents, Pedro Bravo, who was commenting on Vinicius Jr’s dances after scoring for Madrid.

Vinicius vowed to continue dancing and while he didn’t score in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win he danced in what was a powerful message to those racially abusing him.

After fellow Brazilian Rodrygo brilliantly volleyed Carlo Ancelotti’s men in front, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr did a jig on the pitch in celebration.

“When Rodrygo scored the opening goal and the Real Madrid players danced, they deserved to and they should’ve done,” European football expert Andy Brassell told talkSPORT.

“This is a problem not just for Spanish football and Spanish society, it’s an Atletico problem as well. This is something we must say.

“The Frente Atletico, the main ultra group that follows Atletico Madrid, they have made Nazi salutes at games in the last year on several occasions.

“Atletico Madrid, who under Diego Simeone have become one of the biggest clubs in the world, have had a chance to do something about it.

“They have done nothing about it.

“As always it doesn’t fall to the authorities, it falls to the players. It shouldn’t fall to the players but again it’s falling to them to bring this to light and say ‘we’re not going to stand for this.’”

Vinicius Jr came very close to doubling Los Blancos’ lead as his toe poke came back off the post, however, Ernesto Valverde was on hand to slam in the rebound from a tight angle.

Diego Simeone’s side pulled one back in stoppage-time as Mario Hermoso got on the end of a corner.

But it wasn’t enough time to complete the comeback as Real Madrid claimed the derby day win and continued their 100 per cent start to the season.
