US and Mexico propose an “international security assistance mission” to Haiti that is not UN-approved in the face of humanitarian crisis

Mexico and the United States will both introduce a resolution United Nations to deploy a “non-UN international security assistance mission” to Haiti to restore order on the island nation, which has been terrorized by roving gangs in the wake of former President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination last year. 

Ariel Henry, Haiti’s Prime Minister, requested “a specialized arm force” to help the National Police confront the gangs earlier in this month. 

Linda Thomas Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador Ambassador to the UN said Monday at a meeting of the security council that the new proposal was “in direct response to Henry’s request.” 

“It would facilitate international assistance to the Haitian National Police as well as Coast GuardThomas-Greenfield confirmed this on Monday. “By improving security on the ground, aid can be delivered to those in greatest need and could address the ongoing cholera epidemic.”

Haiti is home to approximately 200 gangs. The U.S. already supplies Haiti’s National PoliceWith armored vehicles, security equipment and other equipment.

The US also plans to bring another resolution with Mexico. More sanctionson the people who are responsible for gang violence as well as human rights violations and arms trafficking.

Thomas-Greenfield specifically targeted Jimmy Cherizier (a former officer known as “Barbeque”), who is now the leader of “G9 and Family”, which has blockedaded Haiti’s main fuel port for the past month. 

“By passing this resolution, we would take concrete actions to hold him – and so many other violent criminals – to account,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

Some U.S. lawmakers support a security mission to Haiti

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., Fox News Digital, last weekAn “international force” might be needed to restore order on the island, and stop a mass exodus which could see thousands of migrants fleeing the U.S. 

“First, you’ve got to create a security zone – period, end of story. Nothing else will work until there is a security area,” Sen. Cassidy stated. “That’s really step one, and then after that, you work from there.”
