UK government to speak with Premier League over fixture plans for King Charles’ coronation

The UK government will hold talks with the Premier League during the next few weeks regarding fixtures scheduled to take place on the same day as King Charles’ coronation.

It was announced today that the King’s coronation will take place next year at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6.

The Palace said: “Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce that the coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday 6th May 2023.

“The coronation ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

“The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort.

“The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

Policing needed in London for the King’s coronation will be discussed when the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport) sit down with the Premier League and other sporting bodies regarding sport taking place that weekend.

There are currently 10 Premier League fixtures scheduled for the day of coronation. Three of those fixtures will be held in London.

Fulham hosts Leicester City; Tottenham Hotspur faces Crystal Palace; West Ham takes on Manchester United in London.

Some of those fixtures listed for gameweek 35 will be moved for TV purposes closer to the time but the King’s coronation could also impact the date of those matches and the kick-off times.

While clarity will be available closer to the time, a decision will likely be made in the coming weeks as talks between the relevant bodies will take place.
