UEFA has opened an investigation into the Republic of Ireland women’s team after video emerged of players singing a pro-IRA chant.
Footage shows team members chanting a slogan related to the Irish Republican Army while celebrating a 1-0 World CupPlay-off qualifying against ScotlandIn their Hampden Park dressing rooms.
The team’s manager, Vera Pauw, later apologised and said players would be “reminded of their responsibilities,” while forward Aine O’Gorman told RTE Sport: ‘We sang 100 songs and that was the one that went out. We would just like to apologise to anyone who was offended.”
European football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that it would look into “potential inappropriate behaviour”.
