UEFA has been “constantly monitoring the situation” in Belarus and could yet take “further decisions” against the eastern European nation, after troops from the country were deployed with Russian forces near Ukraine on Monday.
Yesterday, Alexander Lukasenko, the Belarusian president, stated that he had given orders for troops to be deployed with Russian forces in Ukraine.
“Strikes on the territory of Belarus are not just being discussed in Ukraine today, but are also being planned,” Lukashenko said. “Their owners are pushing them to start a war against Belarus to drag us there.”
This assertion was supported by no evidence.
Russia has been banned from participating at Euro 2024 by UEFA due to the current war but Belarus remains able to participate in the tournament and was part of Sunday’s qualification draw in Frankfurt.
