The pilot reported engine problems to Smith Reynolds Airport tower on Saturday as he approached the airport, Pete Wentz (an air safety investigator with National Transportation Safety Board) told Winston Salem-Journal.

He said that he would circle the area. Winston-Salem airportWentz stated that he attempted a second time after he lost control of his plane.
