Toyota could restart efforts to make electric vehicles.

The e-TNGA platform can be seen in the all-electric bZ4X crossover SUV. It is currently being used and will (for the moment) underpin the upcoming 2023 Lexus RZ 450e.

However, according to the sources, Toyota is dealing with an EV manufacturing process that’s too slow and expensive compared to other manufacturers, like Tesla, that have been making electric cars for years. ReutersIt is noted that Toyota co-developed an electric version of its RAV4 SUV with Tesla in 2012, but sources say its engineers didn’t consider it a threat. It sold its share in the development to Tesla in 2017, before starting the development of its own platform.

While Toyota may have been content to rest on the Prius’s laurels, the rest has taken it multiple times. Nissan, General Motors, Volkswagen, and others have been selling pure electric vehicles for years. They also announced plans to completely eliminate gas cars. Toyota’s failure to embrace EVs is not a new concept; The New York Times noted as much in this article from 2009.
