This season, Arsenal’s derby win doesn’t feel like their be-all and end-all

With the supporters yelling at each other Arsenal karaoke in a sun-kissed stadium from their perch at the top of the table, it is clear why this Arsenal ride — for as long as it lasts and as far as it stretches — is the hottest ticket in town.

Signature matches have been a hallmark of the Mikel Arteta era. They invoke a special feeling. Arsenal won a thrilling victory over the United States just over a year back. Tottenham in the same fixture at the Emirates by the exact same scoreline — in isolation, the two games shared a lot of similarities. However, if you look at the club from a wider perspective, much is different. Arteta describes the sensibility around the place as “really powerful”.

Is Arsenal really the best? What is their realistic travel limit? These are difficult questions to answer at the moment. They can only praise the changes that were made during the cacophonous opening to the season. More quality. More consistency. Greater tempo. Greater ability to adapt to setbacks. The style of play has evolved, and it is now more expressive and efficient. The squad is richer and more diverse, and the gap between the top and the bottom reaches of the rest is as wide as it has ever been in years.

It might have been stretching it when a voice in the North Bank shouted for Arsenal to “bring on the 15-year-old” as a teasing insult to their local rivals. With options as varied as the quality of Kieran Tierney
