This is your reminder to watch or re-watch ‘Over The Garden Wall’

One thing is clear as the autumn leaves change and the crisp autumn chill creeps into the air: Over the Garden Wall season.

Patrick McHale created this miniseries for Cartoon Network in 2014. It won the Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program. Through its 10 amazing episodes, Over the Garden WallTwo brothers’ journey through the mysteriously beautiful and strangely strange land of the Unknown will captivate you. They discover new communities and solve pressing mysteries. They also make friends with unexpected people. Their only problem is finding their way home.

What is the secret to success? Over the Garden WallWhat is the perfect watch for fall?

It’s not so.

You can definitely enjoy Over the Garden Wall Although the show is enjoyable at any time of year, the orange-hued foliage, golden sunsets and dark nights make it more memorable in autumn. It’s the perfect blend of autumn’s best and most frightening elements. As Samuel Ramey voices the Beast, fall foliage, comfort food and a host of seasonal pumpkins are featured alongside wicked spirits, witches and an intruder known as the Beast. When you’re in the Unknown, you don’t know if you’re about to be comforted or creeped out — or some strange fusion of the two.

Wirt, a teenage boy voiced by Elijah Wood and Greg, his younger stepbrother (voiced in Collin Dean), are the entry points into Unknown. They are lost in the new world and don’t know how to escape. The denizens from the Unknown are willing to assist them. They are most of them anyway. Christopher Lloyd voices a mysterious Woodsman who offers shelter to Wirt, Greg, and a talking bluebird called Beatrice (voiced Melanie Lynskey). Adelaide is a wise woman who might be able to bring them back. The charming Unknown also includes a town full of pumpkin people, an educator dedicated to animals and a pub with many character archetypes such as the Tailor, the Tavern Keeper and the Highwayman.

These characters are able to identify their place in the Unknown’s ecosystem. However, Greg and Wirt stand out. Greg is cheerful and eager to discover more about the Unknown. Greg will talk to anyone, and will try anything. He’s got a teapot on his head, a pet rock that spouts Rock Facts, and pants full of candy — he’s like walking childhood whimsy.

Wirt, however, is a bundle full of teenage angst. Every situation is approached with great trepidation by Wirt. This, combined with his frustration with Greg, makes them two great foils. Both Greg and Wirt’s reactions to being somewhere as new and bizarre as the Unknown are valid — yet neither quite understands where the other is coming from. The result is a remarkable and surprising journey that brings them together. You could say the same thing about the rest of Over the Garden Wall.

Although you may believe you know the plot, you may not always be right. Sometimes what you think you see is not the complete picture.

Over the Garden Wall This is a wonderful, nostalgic ride with dark undertones

Even though Over the Garden Wall It was released in 2014 and has a timeless appeal. While you may think that this animation was made in the 21st Century, it could easily be adapted to the mid-20th-century animation landscape.

This show’s timelessness can be attributed in large part to its beautiful animation. It evokes handdrawn and hand-painted styles that are rare in modern animation. There are many visual inspirations, from old Halloween postcards to the work and art of animator Max FleischerThe 1890s board game“Game of Frog Pond” The Unknown is a beautifully crafted world you will want to explore again and again just to catch all of the wonderful visual details.

Add to Over the Garden WallThe soundtrack to’s charm, which is a collection folky, jazzy songs from McHale, The Blasting Company, is what makes it so special. “Potatoes and Molasses,” a charming earworm, and “Over the Garden Wall”, performed by Jack Jones (who voices a frog), has the feel and feel of a classic love song.

Jones sings the show’s title tune, “Into the Unknown”, which is the standout number. As he sings about autumn’s arrival and pretending that dreams can come true, a piano plays in his ear. Like Over the Garden Wall“Into the Unknown” is beautiful and haunting. It’s a special song that you can only enjoy by listening to it. But at the same time the song acknowledges a loss — of spring, of memories, of simpler times.

There are many of Over the Garden Wall This type of loss is what concerns Wirt. Greg and Wirt see this as a story about coming of age. It also involves the loss of innocence. Many of the characters in this story are dealing with grief. The Beast is the main cause of much of Greg and Wirt’s grief.

The Beast towers over the forests of the Unknown, encased in darkness and with a deep operatic voice, Antlered. Encounters with him — and with several of the Unknown’s spookier citizens — are genuinely frightening. From hungry ghosts to demonic dogs, Over the Garden Wall It isn’t afraid to share its fears. It doesn’t shy away from the existential fear such explorations can invoke. This series balances darker, more mature content with lighthearted moments, musical bangers, so that everyone can find something they love.

Over the Garden Wall The episodes are ten minutes long and can be consumed in one of two ways. No matter what option you choose, it will feel like you have stepped into a forgotten Halloween special.

I suggest wrapping up in a blanket and grabbing a cup of tea or apple cider and getting into the Unknown with Greg and Wirt. There’s no better way than to spend your fall. That’s a Rock Fact!

Over the Garden Wall Max now streams on YouTube Hulu.
