This is the historical date of Oct. 10, 1845 when the US Naval Academy was established following planned mutiny shocks to the nation

The Naval School was created in Annapolis (Maryland)This was the Oct. 10, 1845, in the wake a shocking scandal at sea. 

The famed military institute was renamed U.S. Naval AcademyIn 1850. 

After the discovery of an Atlantic Ocean mutiny, the school was founded. U.S. Navy brig Somers.

Three sailors were executed on the high seas — including the 19-year-old son of Secretary of War John Canfield Spencer, which only elevated the national profile of the sensational incident.

The ship set sail from New York on September 1842 to West Africa as part of a training mission for teenage volunteers interested in a career in the Navy.

“Discipline deteriorated on the Somers and it was determined by a court of inquiry aboard ship that Midshipman Philip Spencer and his two chief confederates, Boatswains Mate Samuel Cromwell and Seaman Elisha Small, were guilty of a ‘determined attempt to commit a mutiny,’” reported the U.S. The online history of the Naval Academy.

“The incident led to doubts about the wisdom of having midshipmen on board ship directly to learn by doing. The three were hanged at yardarm. The nation was shocked to hear about the Somers mutiny.

The U.S. The U.S. Naval Academy was founded following a planned mutiny in the Atlantic Ocean aboard U.S. Navy Brig Somers.

The Somers is the only ship that has ever been subject to mutiny in American Navy history. 

Captain Alexander Slidell Mackenzie commanded executions without trial in court-martial.

The allegations of insubordination, swift hangings and other charges made it clear that a rigorous program was needed to educate and train America’s brightest minds to become professional Naval officers. 

The U.S. brig-of-war Somers, which experienced a mutiny on her return voyage from the African coast in 1842. The hanging of the three ringleaders, Philip Spencer, Samuel Cromwell and Elijah Small, from the yardarm brought a quick end to the mutiny. It remains the only mutiny in U.S. Navy history. The U.S. brigade-of-war Somers experienced a mutiny in 1842 on her return journey from the African coast. “Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft established the Naval School at the former Fort Severn … with a class of 50 midshipmen and seven professors,” reported the American Battlefield Trust this year. 

The Naval Academy stated that the school was founded without any congressional funding.

Added Battlefield Trust: The initial curriculum consisted of two years’ study in mathematics and navigation, steam engineering, steam engineering as well as English, natural philosophy, French, English and chemistry. The Naval School was renamed the Naval Academy five years later. It offers a full four year course of study, which is complemented by summer training at sea.  

Since its inception, the Naval Academy has produced a remarkable list of space explorers, high-seas heroes and global leaders.

One of its most famous graduates is Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (who commanded the U.S. Navy’s Pacific fleet, which was the largest battleship in human history) and President Jimmy Carter (who enrolled at the academy at the heightof the war in 1943); and Alan Shepard from NASA, the second American and first human to travel into space. 

Five chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were produced by the school, and nine others. Marine Corps Commandants54 astronauts were awarded the Medal of Honor, and 73 Medal of Honor winners were also among them.

Mutineer Midshipman Spencer (whose brazen subordination led to the formation of the academy”) “was conspiring to seize control of the vessel with around twenty members of crew.” [Somers]The Naval History and Heritage Command stated that they would “murder her officers and engage with piracy.” 

Three mutineers, including the son, aged 19, of Secretary of War John Canfield Spencer were executed by hanging from the sea.

It added: “Midshipman Spencer’s general reputation was not particularly good and he was known … to have done a number of things harmful to the discipline of the ship.”

Captain Mackenzie, a well-known historian and author, was friends with Washington Irving (19th century). 

Mackenzie was personally scandalized and outraged by the decision to execute three of his sailors without trial. In 1843, he was cleared by court-martial and continued his service in the Navy until his death on 1848.
