The old adage goes, “you only have one chance to make a good impression.” But for this dog, who was living in squalor and fending for her own survival, that opportunity never presented itself. When we first met her, she seemed aggressive – but she had every right to be. She was protective of what was most important to her.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis volunteers arrived to rescue the dog. They were met by a fearsome, female dog who wouldn’t stop growingling when they approached her. After listening carefully, rescuers heard tiny crying babies. So that’s why she’s so aggressive. She has plenty to be defensive about. She has few souls to take care of.

Despite Mama’s aggression, the rescuers couldn’t let themselves get intimidated. They had to remind themselves that their duty was getting the family to safety. They created a large trap for human beings and filled it with food.
At first, Mama saw this and didn’t like it one bit– she started growling louder and louder as the rescuers got closer to her babies!

One of the rescuers took one of her puppies. Mama followed the rescuer and walked straight to the trap after seeing it. After seeing that, the volunteer placed puppy #1 into a soft bag. It was time to collect the rest of their litter. They were sleeping in a corner. The rescuer saved each one of them. Six pups were total.

Mama’s entire disposition alteration happened the moment she was unloaded from the truck and set eyes on her babies again. It was almost as if she knew exactly what was going on. Dogs can be quite smart, as you probably know.

Mama had facial scars. Perhaps from dog fighting. She was so happy to be back with her children in a comfortable spot. It was so much better than the horrible place they were living in!
She gave each dog a sniff, and then a kiss. Then it was time to go for a much-needed sleep.
