What you should know
- The Soundcore VRP10 Bluetooth earbuds can be used with VR headsets and gaming consoles.
- Anker parent company boasted the ability of these earbuds being used with VR headsets. The USB Type-C dongle switches the earbuds from a 2.4GHz signal to the headset.
- Bluetooth headphones are not compatible with VR due to the Bluetooth codec’s audio latency.
Anker held a New York City event last week and I was able to see the Soundcore earbuds, which are made by the popular accessory manufacturer Anker. These aren’t your average “gaming” headphones. These Bluetooth earbuds are specifically designed for VR use, which is something that’s never been possible before.
The Soundcore VR P10 earbuds are due to arrive later in the year. They should address a major problem. Oculus Quest 2(Opens in new tab users. Bluetooth connections are notorious for their high latency. Oftentimes, true wireless earbuds — like the design of the Soundcore VR P10 earbuds — have a latency between 100 and 300 milliseconds, meaning a full 1/3 of a second can go by before you hear the sound of whatever is happening on the display of your VR headset (or smartphone’s screen). This is an inherent characteristic of Bluetooth headphones and can cause VR headset users to become very sick.
The Soundcore VRP10 earbuds however are different. You’ll see in the photos that they have a tiny USB Type-C dongle. This allows you to switch between Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless. We know that 2.4GHz has a faster signal speed, as we have seen from game controllers. This switch can reduce the latency by as much as 100ms (at most for Bluetooth headphones) and down to one digit in ideal circumstances.
The Soundcore VR P10’s case can be found in the photos above. This case could make the perfect pair of headphones if Anker launches them later this year. They make excellent earbuds to use with a Nintendo Switch’s bottom-facing USB Type C port. Soundcore should deliver, hopefully.
Logitech Chorus, if you don’t mind wearing removable earbuds on your Meta Quest 2, is the best option. It delivers incredible sound quality and has built-in speakers.
