The home fans didn’t sound happy and their woes were made worse by the fact the Hatters’ goalscorer, Carlton Morris, had spent 15 years with the Norfolk club, making just one appearance.

Kenny McLean, eight-goal goal scorer Josh Sargent and Kenny McLean were also sent off on the night. The result left the hosts feeling battered.

Dean Smith and his men could be in trouble with games against third place Sheffield United and second placed Burnley.

Alvin Martin, a former England and Premier League defender, gave the club a stark warning after they released their financial results earlier in the week.

“Well, you’ve got to say it was a really impressive performance by Luton,” he began.

“As poor as they were on the night, Norwich, the Luton side played with intelligence, zest, and they got the balance right between coming here and keeping the crowd quiet but also, throughout the game, offering an attacking threat.

“It was a really good goal they got, Morris ran his socks off up front as a lone striker most of the time but it was a lovely piece of finishing. Morris and [Teemu] Pukki, and had your money on one to score it would have always been Morris.”

Asked about the reaction of the home fans and if there was a mini-crisis, Martin added: “Absolutely, I said before the game, they are in debt, Norwich. They must get out of this division.

“They have got a huge wage bill but on tonight’s performance and listening to the crowd at the end, there is a crisis on here.”

Earlier in the game, Martin said: “They look way off it, Norwich. Way off getting out of the divsion on this performance.”

And while commenting on Kenny McLean’s red card and Josh Sargeant’s injury, he added: “Everything that could go wrong for Dean Smith tonight, has gone wrong.”
