Chris Eubank Jr refuted a claim that Conor Benn reached out to him over the phone after the latter’s failed drugs test emerged.
It was made public on Wednesday morning Benn failed the voluntary anti-doping association (VADA) testAfter they found traces clomifene, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in their system.
Shortly after, things went from bad to worse, as the British Boxing Board of Control released a statement that the fight would be ‘prohibited’.
With that being said, there was the saving grace that according to both Eubank Jr’s promoter, Kalle Sauerland, and Benn claimed that the pair had spokenThey agreed to continue the fight.
“I’ve not committed any violations,” Benn shared his thoughts with the Matchroom YouTube Channel. “I’ve not been suspended. So, as far as I’m concerned the fight is still going ahead.
“I’ve spoken to Chris personally and we both want the fight to go ahead. We both have received medical and legal advice. We want the fight for the fans.
“I’ve signed up to every voluntary anti-doping test there is under the sun. Through my whole career, all of my UKAD testing have returned negative results.
“I’ve never had any issues before, even in the lead-up to this fight, my tests have come up negative. My team will now find out the reason for my initial negative test result.
“As far as I’m concerned the fight is going ahead and I’m a clean athlete and we’ll get to the bottom of this.”
According to Eubank Jr, however, he has not spoken with Benn about the failed drugs test, as he said before his media workout, “There was no phone call, we haven’t spoken since this has been announced and it’s a shame.
“But, my promoters, his promoters and the British Boxing Board of Control are going to sort it out.
“I’m ready, I’m clean, I’m 60 per cent, I’ve been tested my entire career for the last ten years and I’ve been tested more than I’ve ever been tested for a fight for this training camp.
“I have an app on my phone where I have to designate where I’m going to be every single day and I’ve been on that for the whole of my career and I will be on that for the rest of my career.
“They can test me for blood, urine, unannounced whenever they see fit, I’ve even been tested on holiday.
“Obviously I don’t condone illegal substances in the sport of boxingBoxing is not an easy sport and can lead to serious health problems.
“Of course there’s concerns, but I can’t really say too much. I’m ready, I’m a clean fighter, I’m prepared and I’m ready to go, this is all unfolding and I’m in as much know as you guys are.
Asked whether he wanted the fight to go ahead, Eubank Jr replied, “I hope so, it should do.
“I’m ready, he’s ready, my promoters are going to do their best to make sure we get the fight going and that the fans are not let down.”
