The US would be ‘OK’ after Trump’s first term, but two terms are ‘a problem’

In the last days of his presidency, President Barack Obama privately stated to reporters that the country could bail fast enough to be okay after a Donald Trump presidency. However, he said that two terms would be a problem. Bloomberg reports.

The off-the-record conversation that was held on January 17, 2017 — just three days before Trump would assume the presidency — came to light after the Justice Department released a set of documents connected to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, per Bloomberg.

During his talk with the journalists, Obama — who stumped hard for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to win the White House in 2016 — expressed concerns about eight years of Trump being in the White House.

Trump’s 2016 campaign focused on unravelling key elements of Obama White House tenure like the Affordable Care Act, numerous environmental regulations and the administration’s climate policy.

“I think four years is fine. Obama stated at the time that we could bail quickly enough to take on water.

He added: “Eight year would be a problem.” Concern would be expressed about the possibility that some of these norms will begin to corrode and become unusable over a prolonged period.

Trump barnstormed the country after losing to Joe Biden in 2020. He held “Save America” rallies which continue to draw many loyal supporters. The House panel that investigated the January 6, 2021 riot on the United States Capitol is still looking into Trump’s involvement. Although they cannot bring criminal charges against Trump, the committee can recommend a referral to the Department of Justice.
