The slow utopia that is ‘Gilmore Girls’ makes it a case for the filler episode

It’s thrilling to snuggle up with your raggedy emotional support blanket from middle school and watch two women run wild in their fairy-tale town.

Multi-award winning 2000s TV Series Gilmore GirlsIt might seem odd to pick this guilty pleasure. It’s not the compelling stories and dynamic plot that has made the series a favorite of mine. The series is a beautifully unhurried portrayal of Elysian life that I love.

Many TV binge-watchers have found filler episodes to be a major problem. They take away from the main plot of the show and slow down progress on longer story arcs. Many shows have eliminated filler episodes to give viewers in a hurry what they want: the 8-10 episode season. This evil episodic style has dominated the industry, leaving no room for filler. (RIP to default 22-episode seasons.)

Watchers believe that filler episodes have a bad reputation because they don’t relate to the main conflict. Gilmore Girls combats this notion with their filler episodes, utilizing their slow pace to deeply establish characters with dynamism, backstory, emotions, motives, and distinct attitudes far beyond overused tropes like “the dumb blonde” or the intentionally unlikeable no-good-doers.

Every episode of the situational dramaty is a break from my day. A journey to a place in which everyone is unrealistically happy and frivolous spending are not questions. It was a lighthearted, mother-daughter drama with just enough angst that it got us through the week. We need to remember that 2022 is also the year of mother-daughter drama. Gilmore GirlsThis is actually a slow-paced utopian world set in a walkable urban area filled with slow burns.

I find the best parts small moments like Lorelai sending Rory to pick me up. Sixteen Candles while she orders Chinese takeout for dinner — because the only edible things that take up her cabinets are Pop-Tarts and donut holes.

Your life can feel like a constant rush. Gilmore GirlsIt is a wonderful reminder of the beauty and leisure in leisure. If you’re binge-watching the show to speed into the drama and climatic elements, you’re watching it all wrong. The plot points are or ThatA rushed romance or poorly constructed romance won’t make the final kiss that you have waited for forever.

Gilmore Girls are a great reminder that there is beauty in leisure even if your life seems chaotic.

Beauty is everywhere Gilmore GirlsWhile filler episodes may look like they are worth 40 minutes, they really are only worth their famed Score “La-la”.All that building up to the memorable plot points makes these journeys extremely exciting. Instead of just watching characters make decisions, and then inciting action, we learn about their motivations for choosing certain causes. This provides background information that will help us decide whether to reject the guy you adore or accept an unorthodox university acceptance letter.

Season 1’s filler episode 12 “Double Date” doesn’t have much to do with the budding romance between Lorelai and Sookie, Lorelai’s best friend. Instead, viewers get a comical introduction to Lorelai’s unlucky dating streak as she goes on a blind double date with lovebirds Sookie and Jackson — and an ornery man who’d rather be anywhere but. After the date, Lorelai and diner owner (and eventual love interest) Luke Danes exchange quips and cute glances. This small snack serves as an appetizer for the slow-burn romance that is TV.

This episode offers a glimpse into Rory’s friendship with Lane. As their own double-date-turned-catastrophe unfolds, the two lie to their moms about their whereabouts, since Lane’s mom forbids her from dating. Both Rory and Lorelai go above and beyond for their best friends in the episode, solidifying the duo as the ultimate “girl’s girl” pair for the rest of the series. Even when the teenage girls’ lies come to the surface, Rory and Lorelai are quick to re-establish their unique and almost fantasy-like mother-daughter dynamic that reigns supreme throughout the show’s lifespan. We also have some cool banter about Claudine Langet, the inspiration behind. “Claudine” by the Rolling Stones.)

My unhealthy attachment Gilmore GirlsIt is linked to the current network order model. In the past, we had arcs and dynamic characters that work to win people over. You might be asking, “But why would AnyoneWould you rather watch empty filler episodes? It’s possible that viewers don’t realize how much they have lost by watching episodes that “nothing happens.” The series would not have the filler episodes that were set up for the sad season finales. Slow-burn romances wouldn’t have a place in the series. Shawshank RedemptionYoko ono, who provide the ever-so-lovely “Hey! You also know that? moments.

There are very few TV shows that can wrench your heart with the season’s finale twists. Then, the show seamlessly cuts to the image where the troubadour plays “Wake Me Up before You Go-Go.” Gilmore GirlsIt’s as easy as a je ne sais quoiThat is something that can’t be duplicated in a 10-episode-series period, where the action leaves the space as soon as it enters. Carole King’s “Where You Lead, I Will Follow” Gilmore GirlsThe 2000s sitcom is my comfort until the hard return of cutsie filler episodes.
