Every adopted shelter dog does not receive a welcome party. Bowie the shepherd-mix was looking for his forever home for more than a decade. It was the perfect way to send him off, according to his friends at Whatcom Humane Society.
Bowie quickly won the hearts of all rescue workers and volunteers from the beginning, and became a household name among them.
According to development associate Andrea Merrill of the Whatcom Humane Society, “he was really, really lovely.”
Bowie was taken care of by the employees of the shelter for approximately a year. Volunteers would accompany Bowie on treks in order to get away from the shelter and interact with him during rescue.
He’s one of those dogs who just need the support of his entire village, Merrill added. This is why he’s so special. [the adoptions] kept failing,
Bowie was able to get several adoption requests at that time. However, none of them were a good fit.
Merrill said that it was obvious that he needed someone who could accept the fact he is a great dog and is still learning his manners.
Bowie was immediately welcomed back to the shelter following each unsuccessful adoption. His pals at the humane society welcomed him back with wide arms despite their confusion about why he hadn’t been adopted yet.
A nearby college student discovered Bowie’s tale on social media about a year into his time at WHS and began following along.
Merrill stated, “She was completely in love with him, but it wasn’t the proper moment.
Six months after graduating from college, the woman got her first job. After discovering that Bowie was still available for adoption at WHS, the woman immediately submitted an application.
It’s a situation where “the right person found the right dog,” according to Merrill. And everyone at Whatcom was eagerly anticipating Bowie’s beginning of this new chapter.
The humane society’s employees didn’t think a red carpet sendoff was normal, but they felt it was appropriate for their very own four-legged celebrity. He had lots of friends who wanted him to say farewell.
WHS employees created a red carpet that ran from the kennels to Bowie’s door. They laid out signs specially for Bowie on the carpet as a way to say goodbye.
Merrill maintained that the tears were not from sadness but joy. The author says that we were able say goodbye to Bowie in such a sweet way.
Bowie walked out of the shelter onto the red carpet, and immediately moved to his permanent home.
When Bowie isn’t participating in training sessions or going on hikes, he may be seen cuddling with his mother, who grows to love him more and more every day.
Merrill remarked, “She just completely adores him. And Bowie is ecstatic.
