The G7 nations condemned Russian kidnapping Ukrainians in Zaporizhzhia and demanded the return of the facility

Russia was called upon by the G7After reports that Russia kidnapped top Ukrainian workers from Zaporizhia, the Ukrainian government will regain full control of the nuclear power plant.

The power plant was a concern for both Russia and Ukraine during President Vladimir Putin’s invasion. It poses a risk of nuclear catastrophe if it is damaged, or left in disrepair during the conflict. The G7 countries include the U.S. and Canada as well as France, Germany (France), Germany, Italy, Japan, Japan, and the U.K.

“We condemn Russia’s repeated kidnapping of Ukrainian leadership and staff and denounce the application of other forms of pressure on remaining Ukrainian personnel,” the G7 announced in a statement. “These actions further undermine the nuclear safety, security and integrity of the ZNPP.” [Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant]By preventing key personnel performing their essential functions.  We strongly condemn these cruel, reckless, and dangerous acts, and demand that those in detention be immediately released.”

“We urge Russia to immediately return full control of the ZNPP to its rightful sovereign owner, Ukraine, to remove all Russian personnel from the facility, and to stop any attempts to recklessly and dangerously place the ZNPP under Russian administration, which could further jeopardize its safe and secure operations,” the statement added.

Rafael Grossi, IAEA general director, said that the first safety pillar of any nuclear facility is to not violate its physical integrity. “And unfortunately…this has happened. This has happened, and it continues to happen. The physical attack, wittingly or unwittingly – the hits that this facility has received and that I could personally see and assess together with my experts – is simply unacceptable.”

“We’re playing with fire, and something very, extremely catastrophic could occur,” he said.
