Christina Bingman heard Alexa barking around two in the morning. She jumped from bed to investigate.
“It was the ‘something’s out there’ bark,” Bingman told The Dodo.
Bingman immediately went outside to check on the family’s poultry, but after carefully scanning the entire yard, she found nothing unusual. Although she didn’t understand why Alexa was so upset, she returned to her bed to check that everything was fine. Alexa’s nighttime barking woke her mother up several times until she finally got up for the day several hours later.
It wasn’t until one of her children woke up that Bingman was able to solve the mystery of what Alexa was barking at.

“I discovered that she was actually barking at the bag of Cat food once the family had woken up for the day,” Bingman said. “My youngest told me to look at the window and laughed at how real the cat on the bag looked, and how giant it was. Alexa was trying to explain it to me, and then it hit me. There was a giant cat staring in the window at her all night.”
The cat food bag usually doesn’t reside outside, but because the container it usually lives in was damaged and Bingman didn’t want any of her pets to get into it, she left it on a table outside the window. Alexa apparently didn’t like that the bag against her window gave the impression of a large cat outside.
“I immediately started to laugh,” Bingman said.
Alexa believed she had been protecting her family from the cat and was therefore puzzled that no one would pay any attention to her. Fortunately, the riddle has been solved, allowing Alexa to unwind and her mother to finally have a decent night’s rest once more.
