Judi Dench asked Netflix to add a disclaimer in the British royal family drama The Crown.

Open letter from Dame Judi Dench to the British newspaper The TimesIn which she criticised Netflix’s hit series The Crown for being ‘cruelly unjust’ for the deception of the royal family.
Dench’s letter reads, “The closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.”
“While many will recognize The Crown for the brilliant but fictionalized account of events it is, I fear that a significant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take its version of history as being wholly true,” she explained.
‘This is both cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging to the institution they represent,’ the actress added. “No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged.”
The actress who has portrayed historical queens including Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria on the screen continued, “Despite this week stating publicly that ‘The Crown’ has always been a ‘fictionalized drama’, the program makers have resisted all calls for them to carry a disclaimer at the start of each episode.”
Asking Netflix to add a disclaimer, the 87-year-old actress continued, “The time has come for Netflix to reconsider- for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve their own reputation in the eyes of their British subscribers.”
The trailer for The CrownSeason 5 premiered on Thursday, Oct 20, 2022. The next season will focus on the Divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
The CrownSeason 5 will be released on Netflix on November 9, 2022.
