The Controversial Driving App for the First Time

  • Autopilot, Tesla’s advanced driving-assistance system, was tested in my Model Y SUV.
  • It automatically follows the curves of the road and keeps up with traffic.
  • It would be very useful on boring and long highway drives.

Elon Musk always says it: Tesla is just as good as any other company. Software companyIt is an automaker.

Autopilot, regardless of your opinion, is undoubtedly the most controversial piece technology at the company.

Semi-automated driving is a favorite feature of Tesla owners. The federal government is also using semi-automated driving. investigating crashesAutopilot-enabled cars collided avec parked emergency vehicles. Some Safety expertsAutopilot may be a misleading moniker. It is not autonomous.

Naturally, I was excited to try Autopilot out for myself. Review of a Tesla Model Y recently.

Autopilot: Is it self-driving or does it have a manual?

Autopilot, which was released in 2014, allows advanced driver-assistance systems to use a variety of cameras to see around traffic and assist with driving. It’s basically a smarter version to cruise control. Autopilot adjusts speed to match the vehicle ahead, and follows bends in traffic.

Musk has claimed that self-driving Teslas are near the end of his tenure, but it hasn’t happened yet. Autopilot ranks at Level 2 on the widely accepted list of features similar to those offered by other brands. There are five levels of automation for drivingIt requires human supervision. A Level 5 car would allow passengers to take a nap while the vehicle does 100%.

All Teslas come standard with Autopilot. This differs from the company’s more expensive models. Autopilot with enhanced capabilities Complete Self-DrivingFeatures that add extra capabilities while not delivering full autonomy.

How does it feel to use?

Autopilot did an impressive job over several hours driving on both divided highways as well as some two-lane roads. Full disclosure: The test was conducted in daylight and under perfect weather conditions.

Autopilot was activated almost instantly after depressing the right stalk two times. Other systems I have triedIt may take several seconds to lock in the lane lines. The system is deactivated by knocking or braking the stalk up.

Autopilot kept the SUV in its lane confidently without any jitters or wavering. Although it was able to follow bends well, I found some curves too steep for my liking. It was very responsive to other cars. When it saw traffic, it would slow down and then speed up when things clear up. The right scroll wheel on the steering wheel can be used to set the cruising speed. Autopilot did a great job responding to the few instances when another car was merging in front Tesla.

The car’s touchscreen displays a handy visualization that shows what the vehicle sees. This includes other cars, traffic cones and more. Autopilot will turn on and display a blue icon at the steering wheel. It also highlights the lane lines in bright blue. The Model Y should have a display in front the driver, but that’s not what I want. That way, one could view Autopilot’s status — including the set speed and whether it detects the car ahead — without looking away from the road.

Tesla owners are often annoyed by their cars telling them to hold the wheel while Autopilot is turned on. But, that was not an issue for me. Keep a slight pressure on the wheel to let the car know that you’re engaged.

What is the verdict?

Autopilot is a wonderful tool for long, boring road trips. The experience was not mine. phantom-braking errorTesla owners reported.

It’s important to be aware of the system’s limitations. Although Autopilot can be used on any road with visible lanes, it is not recommended. It will react to traffic lights, but activates on roads without them. Autopilot was useful on some roads other than highways, but I found it disturbing that Autopilot could not take full control of those unpredictable environments.

Maybe one day, a Tesla can drive itself. This year, if you believe Elon Musk). However, that future is still a ways off.
