Texas man sentenced to multiple DWI convictions for drunken crash that claimed the life of his father and four other family members

A Houston manWith five previous convictions for driving while impaired, he was sentenced to 35 year imprisonment for a 2018 drunken driving crash that resulted in the death of a father and his four children in Harris County.

In a Saturday newsrelease Harris County District AttorneyKim Ogg stated that Owen McNett, 50, was convicted by a jury of felony murder last month. 

After hearing from McNett’s defense counsel, he decided to have his punishment determined and sentencing imposed by Lori Chambers Gray, State District Judge.

McNett was accused of felony murder for causing the death of another person while committing another crime. McNett was to be sentenced to life in prison by the DA.

McNett had a history of driving drunk before the fatal crash. According to the Harris County DA’s Office, McNett even spent three periods in prison for it.

McNett was sentenced to probation in 1992 for a DWI conviction in Kimble County. He was arrested in Tarrant County four years later for his second DWI offense and sentenced to 30 day in jail.

McNett was convicted of his third DWI in Johnson County in 2006. This led to a seven year sentence. He was later arrested in Houston for his fourth DWI charge and sentenced to 4 years in prison.

McLennan County DPS troopers arrested him in November 2012. He was sentenced to six-years in prison. This marked McNett’s fifth DWI conviction.

McNett was currently on parole after being convicted of fifth DWI offense.

Ogg stated that McNett was a repeat offenders who was already on parole for driving drunk when the death of his husband and father-of-four, McNett. “He was a one man crime wave on wheels, it was only a matter time until he killed somebody.”
