Texas A&M stuns No. 5 LSU, putting a major damper on College Football Playoff prospects

Devon Achane had a career-best 215 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and Texas A&M stunned No. 5 LSU 38-23 Saturday night. All but certain Knocking the TigersOut of contention to participate in the College Football Playoff.

Conner WeigmanDemani Richardson recovered a fumble to score, while he threw two TD passes (5-7, 2-6 Southeastern Conference). The game was tied at 17-all in the third quarter before A&M scored 21 straight points.

LSU (9-3 (6-2), No. 5 CFP) already had a spot in next week’s SEC title match against unbeaten No. 1 Georgia and a win there would have placed the Tigers in the playoff. Despite three losses, it is unlikely that beating the Bulldogs will be enough.

The Aggies opened the season ranked No. 6 but won’t qualify for a Bowl gameThey had a strong end to their disappointing season for the first-time since 2008. After ending a six game skid last week, the team won consecutive games.

Achane ran for 119 yards and a score before halftime to help A&M to a 17-10 lead.

LSU opened the 2nd half with a nine play, 71 yard drive. John Emery Jr. ran 19 yards to tie the score at 17-17.

But Edgerrin Cooper hit Jayden Daniels and forced him to fumble on LSU’s next drive. Richardson scooped it up and dashed 37 yards for his second touchdown this season to put A&M on top 24-17 with about seven minutes left in the third quarter.

The Aggies led 31-17 after the Aggies’ first quarter. Moose Muhammad made a 21 yard TD catch with just one hand.

Achane ran a 10-yard touchdown run after returning from a foot injury that had prevented him from playing in two games. It made it 38-17 with just eight minutes remaining.

Kyle Field was jammed with over 93,000 fans. Many began to rush for the field with just 17 seconds remaining, leading to a delay. It was quite a contrast from last week when most of the crowd had left the field after halftime because it was cold and wet.

When time was up, those fans joined thousands more on the field.

Daniels ran for 84 yards and threw for 189. Emery also had three touchdowns. The Tigers lost their first match since Oct. 8, when they lost 40-13 at Tennessee.

OREGON PLAYER POINTS OREGON STRATE FAN AFTER DEVASTATING LOSS

Emery reduced the lead to 38-23 by running 3 yards with 6 1/2 minutes left, but the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Daniels nearly connected with Jaray Jenkins in the end zone on fourth down on LSU’s next possession, but Tyreek Chappell knocked the ball out of Jenkins’ hands. The Aggies ended the clock.

Achane put A&M ahead early with a 10-yard TD run on the team’s first possession.

Emery tied it early in the second half with a 4-yard run.

After the Aggies exchanged field goals, the lead was regained when Weigman under heavy pressure threw and connected with Donovan Green at 3-yards just before the half-time break. Achane had runs totalling 29 and 17 yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

LSU: With virtually no playoff opportunities, Coach Brian Kelly’s Tigers must quickly overcome this issue if they are to be competitive with the Bulldogs.

Texas A&M: The Aggies showed they have plenty of talent to compete with teams at the top of the SEC. The question is why coach Jimbo Fisher’s team couldn’t put it together earlier in the year. Since beating Alabama, the Aggies haven’t won an SEC championship game. Arkansas on September 24.
