Tech tip: 3 steps to make your (or a family member’s) phone safer

When it comes to tech questions, I’ve gotten them all. More than ever, I’m hearing from people inundated with requests For older family membersFix their devices.

Perhaps they clicked on a malicious link and now their computer is acting strangely. Tap or click for eight signs it’s infected with malware or other malicious software.

Sometimes the problem is more basic, like text too small for you to read. Just a few clicks in the settings menu can make their life easier. Tap or click here for text to be larger on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

1. Turn on the emergency and health settings

Smartphones can save your life if it’s set up correctly. It’s critical to set this up in 

In the case of a health event, emergency responders can access the iPhone Health app — even if the phone is locked. Add details like your — or your loved one’s — name, age, medical conditions, allergies, and emergency contacts to give first responders more information.

After you fill out the Health Details section, it’s time to set up the Medical ID. 

  • Open the iPhone Health app and tap the profile photo.
  • Select Medical ID > Get Started or Edit. Please enter any information about your health.
  • Tap Emergency Contact and add a trusted person’s information.
  • Tap Done

One more step: Allow emergency services to access the Medical ID even when the phone’s screen is locked. Here’s what to do:

  • Open the Health app and tap the profile picture.
  • Tap Medical ID > Edit.
  • In the Emergency Access section, slide the toggles next to Show When Locked and Share During Emergency Call to the right to enable.

First responders can now view important medical information.

How to set up an Android emergency setting

These steps will help you, or someone you love, use an Android phone. Note that steps vary depending on what phone you’re using.

  • Go to Settings > Safety & emergency.
  • Select Medical Information and enter information such as name, blood type, allergies, medications, etc.
  • You can toggle this setting at the bottom.

Set up emergency contacts. Just go to Safety & Emergency settings > Emergency Contacts > Add Contact. 

Here are some other ways you can share your Android medical information in an emergency.

2. Make sure there’s always a backup in place

If your phone is stolen or damaged, you and your loved ones could be without their phones. That’s why automated backups are so important. 

One woman lost her text messages after her husband died, according to my sources. She was devastated. To save text, tap or click.

To enable iCloud data backing on an iPhone:

  • Go to Settings > [name] iCloud > iCloud Drive.
  • Click on Sync this iPhone.

iCloud offers 5GB free storage. If you need more space, you’ll have to pay 99 cents for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, and $9.99 for 2TB.

These steps will allow you to set up Android for automatic backup:

  • Open the Google One App.
  • Tap Storage and scroll to Backup.
  • Tap View > Set up data backup > Manage backup.

Free 15GB cloud storage With your Google account. A Basic Google One plan, which costs $1.99 per month and provides 100GB storage, is available if you require more storage. A Standard plan is $2.99 monthly and includes 200GB of storage. A Premium plan is $9.99 and provides 2TB of storage. 

There you can select your backup settings.

3. Unknown callers should be silenced

Many people want to help their grandparents and parents who have fallen for scams by the phone. Crooks have become smarter than ever and can get anyone on the telephone to give out personal details or to make money.

This tip will spare your relative the trouble of dealing spam. Notifying unknown callers by silence could cause them to miss a legitimate call. A voicemail is usually left by a person who actually needs to reach you.

Unknown callers can be silenced on an iPhone

  • Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers.
  • Slide the toggle to Silence unknown callers.

Now, the phone won’t ring when an unknown number calls. It will be silent, sent to voicemail, displayed on the Recents or turned off. Calls from familiar numbers will continue to ring normally.

Also, you can hide text messages from unknown reminders. Here’s how:

  • Go to Settings > Messages.
  • Click the toggle next Filter Unknown Senders.

Here’s how to block calls from unknown callers on an Android phone:

  • Tap the Phone icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  • Select Settings > Blocked Numbers.
  • Slide the toggle next Block Calls from Unidentified Callers.
