Sweet Dog Struggles to Hold Hands Throughout Her Shelter Kennel Bars

Even though it can be challenging to spend weeks in an animal shelter, 1-year-old Maxine isn’t giving up.

This adorable shepherd-mix, who has been staying at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter for over two months, has found a new way to interact with people passing by her crate. She puts her paw through an opening in her cage and then places it in their hands.

The animal shelter posted on Facebook, “This gorgeous puppy is starving for affection.”

Maxine’s family relinquished her to the shelter due to issues with their other resident dog.

“She was great with everyone in the home, but the other dog did not like her,” Melissa, SBCAS’ volunteer coordinator, told The Dodo.

Because of this, Maxine’s family brought her to SBCAS in hopes of finding her the perfect family.

Maxine is still looking for her happy family. However, adoptions are slower than usual. The shelter is full.

Maxine is always so happy when someone visits her kennel.

In one video posted by SBCAS to Facebook, Maxine can be seen enjoying a visitor’s cuddles through the crate’s bars. Maxine approaches her new friend as close as she can, despite only being able to reach a few fingers inside the cage.

Maxine wags her tail vigorously, rolls onto her back in the ideal belly-rub position, and kisses her friend’s hand.

While Maxine is a sweetheart, shelter staff love Maxine and are happy to spend time with her. However, they want Maxine to be able to live in a loving home. Families.

“Adoptions are free right now because the shelter is at maxed capacity,” Melissa said. “We’re hoping this will help her find her people.”

Maxine’s friends at the shelter think that she would thrive as the sole pet in her home because of her prior familiarity with animals. SBCAS will provide a free spay operation if Maxine does find her forever family.

Maxine is still waiting for her happily everafter, but Maxine’s caregivers at the shelter are there to keep her company.

Maxine can be reached at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter and ask for resident #A549158.
