Steven Gerrard in favour of introducing Premier League All-Star game: ‘North would win’

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has said he would “love to see” a Premier LeagueAll-Star football introduced in English football

ChelseaOwner Todd Boehly started a debate earlier in the weekI suggest that the Premier League adopts the American sports model and create an All-Star competition which pits players in the north against their counterparts in the south.

Boehly also owns shares in the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB and NBA franchise LA Lakers, said the revenue could support the English football pyramid.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp laughed off the idea by highlighting the fact the football calendar is already jampacked with games.

Klopp mocks All-Star game: ‘Harlem Globetrotters too?’

Gerrard has said he understood Klopp’s point of view but would tune in to watch an All-Star contest if it was ever introduced.

Speaking ahead of Villa’s Friday night fixture against Southampton, Gerrard said: “From a personal point of view, I’d love to see it. I would’ve loved to have played in it.

“The north would win it — because LiverpoolAnd Manchester City are the two strongest teams in the league in my opinion.

“But I do agree with what I’ve heard a few other managers say — and that is in terms of, we’ve got enough to focus on. There’s enough games in the calendar.

“And that’s not from a European point of view, so they must be in an even more difficult situation.

“But I know from managing Rangers, if you’re involved in Europe, the last thing you need is another game in the calendar.

“It’s a nice idea — one that’s outside the box but unfortunately I can’t see it happening.

“I’d love to watch it though. I’d definitely have the popcorn out for that one. It’d be a good one.”
