Stepson, Director of School Board, is charged with assaulting cops on January 6

  • A man and his stepson were arrested last week on multiple Capitol riot charges.
  • Prosecutors claim Richard Slaughter, Caden Paul Gottfried and other cops fought in a Capitol tunnel on Jan. 6.

Washington’s state school board director was arrested along with his 20-year old stepson on multiple felony/misdemeanor Capitol Riot charges. These include assaulting police officers and obstructing civil order law enforcement.

Richard Slaughter40, and Caden Paul GottfriedThey were charged Wednesday with involvement in the January 6, 2020 insurrection. The two were released before further court proceedings.

Prosecutors claim that the pair were among the rioters who attacked law enforcement officers near Lower West Terrace tunnel’s entrance on Jan. 6. Slaughter, in the midst of chaos, grabbed a shield from another rioter, and kept it from an officer. According to court documents.

Slaughter told the officers to “stand down” and suggested that “nobody would fucking hurt” them if they “just walked away,” according the charging documents. According to prosecution, Slaughter then used the long pole to attack officers on the front line of tunnel. He also gave chemical spray to another mob member.

According to prosecutors, Gottfried was also inside the tunnel and used his weight to push back against the guarding officers. According to court records, Gottfried was eventually taken into the tunnel by law enforcement officers. He was held for a time before being released. 

Investigators were first alerted about Slaughter & Gottfried’s presence in the riot following an incident on the flight home from Alaska Airlines. According to prosecutors the men were cited not only for violating the airline’s Mask Policy but also for protesting the results. 

Slaughter, during a February 2021 interview with the FBI, stated that he was present at the Capitol Building on Jan. 6, along Gottfried, but denied any crime. Slaughter allegedly told investigators, “conservatives do not protest, they have work.”

Slaughter was installed as a director of the Orting Schools District school boardDecember 2021. Insider asked for comment from the Washington school district spokesperson. However, he told Insider that they did not immediately respond. King 5 NewsHe confirmed Thursday that he was still a board member.

Slaughter and Gottfried didn’t have any attorney information.

More than 900 people are currently in prisonAs a result of the attack Nearly 400 people pleaded guilty.
