Southgate prepares for the final game before World Cup with Maguire dropping, Ramsdale in goal and Alexander-Arnold participating

England lost 1-0 to Italy on Friday, and were therefore relegated out of their Nations League group

England have failed to win in five and haven’t scored from open play since March, which is hardly ideal.

Southgate’s regulars such as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have struggled for game time this year and he doesn’t appear to know his best side.

We should still expect major changes from this team, however. Friday night’s loss.

And Germany aren’t looking good either, so there could be plenty of changes there as well.

Here, talkSPORT.com has looked at how each side could start at Wembley…

England

Only Jordan Henderson has the Three Lions to worry about.

The Liverpool captain, who has been out for several weeks due to a hamstring problem, was called into the squad late as a replacement for Kalvin Philips.

So it’s unlikely he plays any part in the game on Monday.

There should be a lot rotation, as a few players try to make it into Iran’s starting XI.

After Nick Pope started Friday’s Newcastle United goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale should replace him.

For defence, John Stones will be back after being suspended and AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori will replace Harry Maguire in the back three.

Kieran Trippier is a former left-wing-back player for Southgate, so he could be in the mix with Luke Shaw or Ben Chilwell if he lacks match sharpness.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, might be able to shine in an England shirt.

Declan Rice looks great in the midfield. Jude Bellingham is a good mix of creativity and power.

Harry Kane will be the first to start, with Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney fighting for a place on the bench.

Southgate rates Mason Mount highly, so expect to see him in action while Jack Grealish should be taking up a spot on his left.

Southgate is unlikely to waver from his favoured three at the back

Southgate will not abandon his three favorite back positions.

Germany

Hansi Flick’s side have been hit by a wave of Covid and illness, which has forced Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Julian Brandt out of the squad.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona should be kept in goal.

West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer came off the bench against Hungary and filled in at right-back and he will probably keep his place.

Antonio Rudiger has been suspended. Nico Schlotterbeck will be joining his Borussia Dortmund teammate Niklas Sule in the centre of the defense.

RB Leipzig’s David Raum is a major weapon for Flick and will most likely be at left-back.

Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich are the obvious choices in the middle, while Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala could show England what they missed out on.

After Timo Werner’s failure to impress against Hungary, Thomas Muller will back Kai Havertz and Serge Gnabry.
