Six Airlines Tell Passengers to Refund $600M Cancellations and Delays

  • Six airlines have been ordered by the Department of Transportation to refund passengers.
  • These refunds are worth more than $600 millions among the airline concerned.
  • For delaying refunds, the DoT said that penalties were being considered for $7.25million.

Six airlines were ordered by the Department of Transportation (DoT), to reimburse passengers for cancellations of flights and other disruptions.

TAP Portugal, Aeromexico and El Al were the airlines involved in this case, as announced by DoT in a Press release.

Additionally, the DoT stated that it is considering civil penalties of more than $7.25 Million against carriers for “extremely” late refunds.

Frontier AirlinesThis is the biggest penalty. The largest penalty is facing the airline, which paid $222million in required refunds. 

If the penalty is not pursued, Air India will also be subject to a $1.4 million fine.

According to the DoT, there had been a flood of complaints by airline passengers regarding refunds after the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed hundreds of lives. Cancellation or rescheduling of flights

According to the DoT, US airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds if flights are canceled, changed or cancelled and passengers do not want to accept an alternative offer. It was against the law for airlines not to give vouchers to their customers or refuse refunds.

Pete Buttigieg (US transportation secretary) stated that passengers who are requesting refunds after a flight is cancelled should pay back their money promptly. If that does not happen, we will hold airlines accountable and get the money back to American passengers.

He said, “A flight cancellation can be frustrating enough. You shouldn’t have to haggle or wait for months to get your refund.”
