Simple steps to improve your new or old TV’s picture quality

Are you tired of the same old Christmas movies every year? Instead, relive your favorite Christmas memories with loved ones. Tap or click here for your VHS tapes converted to digital in the nick of time for the holidays.

Keep your furry friends in mind. This time of year can be dangerous for our beloved pets cats and dogs. These are the holiday dangers you should be aware of.

Televisions are affordable this time of year but many people are disappointed after purchasing a new TV. The picture quality doesn’t live up to expectations. A few tweaks can make the picture better.

This is how it looks

Let’s assume you get a great deal on an expensive new TV. It’s easy to connect it and begin watching your favorite TV and movie shows. You will notice that the colors are too bright or off-color as soon as your first program starts.

It isn’t necessarily the TV’s fault. A new TV can sometimes be disappointing when it arrives. That’s often because they aren’t always calibrated correctly for your home’s lighting.

It would be even worse if you bought the store’s floor model. Floor models are heavily tinted to make them stand out in fluorescent lighting. It will look terrible when you put it in regular lighting at home.

It’s possible to hire an expert to set up your new TV. Or, you could save some money and achieve great results by doing it yourself. Let’s start with a basic setting.

1. Use the display presets

There are likely several presets built into your TV that can be used for different purposes, such as watching movies or watching sports channels. You can find these in your TV’s picture settings menu. To find these, consult your TV manual. If you don’t have your manual, tap or click here to find it online.

Sometimes, your new TV might default to presets such as vivid because that gives colors the most pop — often too much. This preset is used by many store models.

The following are the best TV viewing options: Standard preset — or whatever your TV calls it — is your best bet. This switch can solve many image quality issues.

Explore all of the options and decide which one you like. You can also experiment with different settings. There are presets on TVs that allow you to play specific sports. So load up some games and check out what they do.

2. Your eyes are your best friend

If you don’t like any of the presets, take greater control over your picture settings. You’ll be the one watching it, after all. You have the ability to adjust contrast, hue and brightness as well as color temperature.

Start by playing a few movies that have different scenes and lighting. These tips are important to remember:

  • Set your room lighting so it looks the same as when you’re watching TV.
  • Films should include dark scenes, lots of people, and more colorful scenes.
  • Adjust the brightness to make shadows as dark as possible while still showing detail in dark scenes.
  • Move on to a bright scene and adjust the contrast accordingly, making sure that the white spaces are as clean as possible without losing any detail.
  • Next, adjust the temperature of the colors until they look natural to skin tones. You can adjust the brightness of colors by using saturation controls on your TV. The ideal balance between “washed-out” and “hurts the eyes to see” is what you want.

Click or tap here to dive deeper into each picture setting.

Once you are satisfied with the results, try out different movies and lighting levels. To see the changes you have made, turn off your TV several times.

If you don’t entirely trust your eyes, or want a bit more help, there’s another step you can take.

3. Use a calibration disc

A calibration disc can be used to calibrate your computer more precisely. The disc will walk you through each setting, and provide visual images to guide you as you tweak. It works well in most cases, but don’t be afraid to change specific settings based on your preference. It’s your TV, so the best picture is the one you like the most.

There are several options available for purchasing a calibration disc. You can get this Blu-ray from Spears & Munsil that’s helpful for around $40.

Other calibration options

There are other options if you don’t want to purchase a disc. First, check your TV’s manual because you might have a calibration routine built in.

You can also download calibration videos from YouTube if your Smart TV is connected. You can search for “AVS HD 709” to see a series of them. They do require some extra work from you.

Netflix also offers a calibration option for those who want to go technical. Log in to Netflix to visit netflix.com. Click My ListAdd this video to your Netflix list. Next, turn on Netflix on your TV to view your Netflix list. Example Short 23.976.

Fast-forward to the end of the video by starting the video 9:40 Minute Mark. To show color saturation, you’ll also see a pattern of boxes and circles to ensure sharpness and aspect ratio (the boxes should be perfectly square and the circles perfectly round) and a grayscale pattern. Adjust the brightness and contrast so that you can clearly see each box, but make sure the black and white are as bright and dark as possible.

Grayscale testing can also be used to determine if you have an off color temperature. The center gray boxes will have tinted edges.

Performing any of the tips discussed in this article should give you better picture quality than you’ve been experiencing with your TV. You can now enjoy the big game with style.
