Shelter throws the most delightful surprise party for unadoptable senior dogs

Loco, a senior dog who is snarky and witty, has just celebrated a significant birthday milestone. In the animal shelter, birthdays typically pass without much fanfare, but for Loco, the Spartanburg Humane Society staff knew they wanted to do something the pup wouldn’t soon forget.

Chief operating officer at Spartanburg Humane Society Angel Cox told The Dodo that they sang to the animal while it wore a frilly collar and birthday hat. The sweet potato cake she received was a hit with her. The bakery that baked the cake presented her with a Happy Birthday banner for her workplace door.

Numerous of Loco’s favorite people were on the guest list, but dogs were not permitted.

“She is picky about her people,” Cox said. “When she loves you, she It is really loves you. However, she doesn’t like people. Hates them. And she does not like other dogs at all.”

Even though there were no dogs present, everyone had a good time honoring the hot little nugget they’d all grown to know and love for more than two years.

Loco is the face of the refuge. She was given it in 2020 due to her lingering health problems. Loco even has her own private space to escape from the dogs and people around her.

“We moved her to an office that is more comfortable,” Cox said. “She has 3 to 4 dog beds, and sleeps in all of them.”

Loco has had to deal with a lot of medical issues during her time in shelter.

“When she arrived she was 13, heartworm positive, thyroid issues and issues with her hips, so she was not a great candidate for adoption because she came with so many issues and her care would be expensive for most people,” Cox said.

Loco has proven that she is a true fighter. Loco is vaccinated, tested negative for heartworms and receives thyroid medicine to keep her healthy.

Despite being older than some of the shelter’s residents, she is still in good condition. She no longer has a new home because she is a “office dog,” but that doesn’t mean she is enjoying a regular shelter life. Cox says she is their favorite canine, and he credits her for being so playful.

Let’s hope Loco has many more birthdays!
