Sen. Cassidy Defends GOP Leadership After Midterms

  • Following disappointing midterm results Sen. Bill Cassidy spoke out in support of Republican leaders.
  • Cassidy stated that there isn’t “one person who leads the party”, except a sitting president.
  • He indicated that he will continue supporting Mitch McConnell, but avoided asking the same question about Donald Trump.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy has defended GOP leaders after disappointing midterm elections, saying that the party “is not a cult.”

The Louisiana lawmaker said to NBC’s Meet the Press that he will continue supporting Mitch McConnell for Senate leader, even though there may be a need for debate about ideas within the party. 

NBC’s Chuck Todd posed the question of whether maintaining support for the same GOP leaders – namely McConnell, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, former President Donald Trump, and the RNC’s Ronna McDaniel – will create “a problem for Republicans going forward.” 

“First, let me say that we aren’t a cult. Cassidy stated that we are not like a cult. We won’t have one president anointed. Our lodestar should be a collection of principles, ideas and legislative accomplishments. This is where we should go.

 

Cassidy stated that Republicans should “explain the American voter why Republicans possess a better vision of the future” disappointing midterm resultsA GOP that was betting on a red-wave. 

Many critics have been directed at Donald Trump, former President. His hand-selected candidates were defeatedThey are their races. Trump is expected announce himselfOn November 15, he will run for president. 

Todd asked Cassidy on “Meet the Press” whether he would support Trump for the GOP nomination in 2024, or if he would cheer to support a new candidate such as Florida Governor. Ron DeSantis. 

Cassiday stated, “Who will be our next nominee?” “I think the next candidate will be looking towards the future, and not the past. I think that our next candidate is going to win. So I expect to support a candidate who is looking forward.

Todd asked Cassidy about Trump’s support. Cassidy said that it was “theoretical” but that Trump would never happen. Because we must look to the future,

“I will declare that we should be a party based on ideas and principles. Cassidy stated that he was happy for Cassidy to say so. “And I believe our next candidate will similarly reflect that outlook.”
