Riven, the sequel to Myst, is getting a complete remake

Cyan Worlds announces that it is remaking 1997’s PC game Riven: The Sequel To Myst. Indie studio wrote in blog postMonday’s game will be remade by The Starry Expanse Project, a grassroots fan project.

Riven is a puzzle adventure game in which Atrus employs the help of the Stranger and their ability to link books to different worlds known as “Ages” to rescue his wife from his father, Gehn. Starry Expanse Project was established in 2009 by a group of dedicated fans. They took the initiative to recreate Gehn’s story faithfully. RivenMatching the texture and camera from the original game in a 3D environment. The project was stopped by Cyan, who began official efforts to remake it. Both parties reached an agreement that the studio could use some parts of the fan-project as a reference.

“We spoke confidentially with the Starry Expanse team a couple of years ago about the exciting news that Cyan Final words had the resources to tackle remaking Riven,” Cyan said. “Together, we reached an agreement which allowed us to reference core pieces of their efforts to jump-start our development. They ended development on The Starry Expanse Projec.tAs part of our official efforts to remake Riven began.”

The Starry Expanse Project was eventually abandoned after it helped kickstart the initiative. RivenCyan claimed that the group has maintained contact with many of its members despite the remake. One of them was even hired to help with the official remake.
