Rexrode: Titans’ new stadium deal is shrewd, isn’t perfect, is basically inevitable

The Tennessee Titans’ new stadium will have a translucent roof much like SoFi Stadium, glass wall sides with garage doors so a breeze can be invited, a tailgating scene around it that has been inspired by “The Grove” at Ole Miss, a capacity of 55,000 to 60,000, all the amenities and all the events.

Super Bowl. National title game in college football. Final Four. WrestleMania. If there’s a major event you’d like to see in Nashville, it will be in Nashville — other than the World CupYou can, of course. But, it’s okay to give it some time. This is already as good of an event city as you’re going to find, and now it will have the vessel to do it all.

The new stadium won’t have the retractable roof and real grass that I wanted. For all the complaints about Nissan Stadium and what it doesn’t have relative to the modern arenas that populate most of the rest of the league, there are still many more days than not in the course of a regular season in Nashville that are perfect for an open-air stadium. Football on grass, outdoors. It’s still a great thing, and that is being lost, and that’s too bad.

And yes, I’m saying “will” and “will not” because, though Monday’s announcement from Mayor John Cooper on a deal with the Titans was really a case of “when” and not “if,” there’s news in the details as presented. Metro Council has yet to approve it, and some resistance should be expected. The circumstances make it difficult to see this deal in any serious danger.

Those circumstances are spelled out in the headline of the press release the city put out: “New Stadium Proposal Relieves Taxpayer Burden of at Least $1.
