Retired Military Dogs Reunite with Their Former Handler to Share the Golden Years of Pet’s Life

American Humane has released a statement stating that Akim, a retired military dog will be spending his golden years in the company of Jenna, his former handler. Akim and Jenna were reunited almost a year after their separation. It was held in Albuquerque (New Mexico) on July 12.

Together they patrolled the air base and searched for any suspicious vehicles. They also trained with Special Forces of the Republic of Korea Air Force while in South Korea. A situation that could have been fatal led to the duo becoming closer in their duties.

Jenna and Akim were together when Akim swallowed the bee. A severe allergic reaction ensued. Jenna responded by acting quickly, scooping up the 70-pound dog, and bringing him to the base’s doctor.

“I don’t care about me. I care about the welfare of my dog. I just wanted to make sure that he was as comfortable as he could possibly be,” Jenna, recalling the traumatic event, said in a statement. “No one is going to care as much about him as me.”

Jenna spent several nights sleeping in Akim’s kennel while he recovered from the allergic reaction to help him and keep him company. She also started carrying an EpiPen. Jenna decided to adopt Akim after her traumatic experience and gave her an EpiPen.

Akim and Jenna parted ways professionally in November 2021. However, they never lost sight their love for one another. Jenna, therefore, attended Akim’s official retirement this year to adopt her former companion.

American Humane transported Akim from South Korea to Albuquerque (New Mexico) so that he could reunited with Jenna and start his new life.

“I want him to see everything,” Jenna said. “I want him to experience the freedom of life. I want him to be free and enjoy the freedom of living a full life. He still deserves to see the world and get to have some fun.”

Retired military working dogs are more likely to develop health problems after they have completed their physically demanding careers. American Humane provides free preventive and specialized medical care that allows them to live comfortably.

Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and chief executive officer of American Humane, issued a statement saying, “We at American Humane appreciate the lifesaving efforts of all veterans, especially the four-legged military canines who risk their lives to heroically serve our country.” We are delighted that Akim will enjoy retirement with the person he loves the most.
