Reports say Jay-Z May Bid for Washington NFL Team with Jeff Bezos

  • Multiple reports indicate that Jeff Bezos could be interested to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders. 
  • According to these reports, Jay-Z, the music mogul, could join Bezos’s ranks as an investor. 
  • However, the team isn’t for sale. Bezos was linked to four NFL teams starting in 2018. 

Jeff Bezos might be considering his largest purchase to date: an NFL franchise. 

Amazon founder Alexa is “looking at buying the Washington Commanders,” and Jay-Z, a music mogul, could join Bezos to invest. This would be a close friend of Bezos. Telled PeopleThursday. Bloomberg, Washington Post, and TMZ reported the news. 

 A spokesperson for Bezos did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. 

The Commanders aren’t up for sale officially, but Tanya Snyder and Dan Snyder, billionaires, announced Wednesday that they were. They’d hired Bank of AmericaTo “consider potential transactions”, which could include a sale.

The Snyders have been pressured for years to sell their team. This is why the NFL, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and Washington’s attorneys general are investigating allegations of financial irregularities. The team denies these allegations. According to the Post.

But Washington fans may not want to get too excited just yet: Bezos — who’s currently worth $115 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index — is frequently named a potential NFL owner by league observers, disgruntled team owners, and hopeful fans. None of the rumors led to anything and Bezos has never publicly indicated that he is interested in team ownership. 

 

Still, the Amazon billionaire does have a track record of making major acquisitions in DC — he bought the Post for $250 million in 2013 — and a proven interest in football. He attended the Super Bowl in 2020, 2022 and 2022. He also sat beside Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, during a September Thursday night game between Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs. Amazon sponsors Thursday Night Football and plans to broadcast the first ever Black Friday game in 2023. 

Jay-Z would not be new to team ownership: Jay-Z was part-owner of Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. In 2013, he sold his stake.
