Red Sox roster status at the start of an offseason. Looking at all 45 players

Compiling all the Injured List members, you will get the following: Red SoxThe team finished the season with 45 players on their roster. Five of them have contracts that are automatically ending, while three others have options that could allow them to become free agents following the World Series. As the offseason progresses, several others will undoubtedly be designated for assignment and not-tenders.

Here’s a look at all 45, with a special eye on where they stand heading into 2023.

To return to an obvious position (barring a trading)

1. Rafael Devers: Third baseman/best player on the team

When Mookie BettsThe Red Sox traded Devers with one year left. Chaim Bloom, however, has repeatedly gone out of his ways to state that the Red Sox are in a better position today and has the opportunity to keep Devers long-term. The idea of trading Devers this offseason, he said on Thursday, “isn’t on our radar.”

2. Trevor Story: Second baseman

The Red Sox have said that Story can still play shortstop, but it’s clear they prefer to keep him at second base. This season, he was an elite defender. Next year’s shift limits will make infield defense even more important. It is important to get more than 94 games from him.
